Obese adults: whey protein supplementation preserves protein synthesis

Adequate protein supplementation is necessary in a low-calorie diet aimed at weight loss, to ensure the loss of fat mass and the retention of muscle mass.

Protein quality influences both myofibrillar protein synthesis levels, important for the preservation of lean mass during longer term weight loss interventions, and lipolysis. In a clinical study published in the Journal of Nutrition, whey protein integration (Whey Protein) has shown to attenuate the decline in postprandial rates of of protein synthesis and positively affect lipolysis.

The study was conducted on 40 overweight or obese volunteers  (age 35-65 years, body mass index 28-50 kg / m2).
