Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) in the management of male infertility

The roots of Withania sominifera (Ashwagandha), a traditional Ayurveda plant, can play a role in reducing male sterility by acting on the quality of the sperm. The study published on Reprod Biomed Online 2017  report that the oral intake of the root of Ashwagandha allows to inhibit lipid peroxidation, improve the number and motility of sperm and regulate levels of reproductive hormones. The extract of Withania somnifera, mimicking at the receptorial level the action of GABA induces the production of hormones such as LH, FSH and testosterone. Molecular mechanisms are still under study, but the integration with Ashwagandha reduces male infertility both by reducing oxidative stress and mimicking the action of GABA.
