Amalaki the anti-diabetes plant from Ayurvedic medicine

Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), known as Indian gooseberry, is a small or medium-sized tree plant belonging to the Euforbiacee family, originally from India. In Ayurvedic medicine its fruits are used for the preparation of extracts with adaptogenic, anti-aging, hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, hypocholesterolemic activity. In addition is reported tonic properties for hair and skin.

A study published in 2017 reports the in vitro and in vivo antidiabetic action of Emblica officinalis and its active constituent, ellagic acid (EA). The study showed that methanol extract of amalaki (250 or 500 mg / kg for 28 days) significantly decreased fasting glucose and increased serum insulin levels in neonatal streptozotocin-induced non-obese type 2 diabetic rats in a dose-dependent manner. The pancreas immunostaining showed an increase in the size and number of β cells in diabetic rats.
